One thing I love about travelling is that it allows me to meet people doing what they love. From fellow tourists at B&B’s excited to explore new locations and share stories about where they’ve been, to locals proud to tell me about their home and offer insider tips, to guides who, even though they do the same tour day after day, have a passion for their work you can hear in their voice. I experienced all those this past week, and it’s been a delight to be in their presence and witness joy in action.

When you love what you do — whether it be for your vocation, vacation, or day-to-day life — you feel more alive, vibrant, and on purpose.

Your higher energy and enjoyment of life lifts others up and inspires them to want it for themselves.

Like the mailman I met…

I’m staying in Picton at the north end of the south island of New Zealand, part of the Queen Charlotte Sounds. There are various boat tours on offer and I selected to go on the mail run tour where you hop aboard the boat that delivers mail to residents who live along the shoreline with no road access. The route is different every day depending on the day of the week and who has post, groceries, or packages ready to be delivered. I thought it would be a fun way to see the various inlets and get a glimpse into local life. It turned out to be one of the best tours I’ve ever taken.

The postman was Maori, descended from the original Maori tribe from this area. During our four hour tour, he shared many stories about the area from both a historical and environmental aspect. He told us of the environmental restoration projects underway and the commitment of the people to the big picture — a 150 year plan. He spoke of islands in the Sounds that are now protected, predator-free national parks in an attempt to help endangered native bird populations regain numbers after many species, only found in New Zealand, have become extinct because of introduced vermin. In turn, the rebounded bird populations will be the fastest way to reforest an area due to their natural process of reseeding and pollination. He, personally, is involved in studying the forest and its affects on the aquaculture, participating in projects such as killing off non-native trees that have reseeded in natural forests (of which there are few left), and replanting seaweed that has died because of run off from forestry practices using these non-native trees.

In my short time in NZ, there seems to be a sense of reexamining old ways, commitment to betterment for the longterm good of people and place, and an appreciation of the indigenous peoples I’ve not seen anywhere else. And while I understand there’s a lot more to be done, I feel hopeful NZ will succeed. As the postman / tour guide said, “People did this to the environment. It’s our duty to restore it, no matter the cost or how long it will take.”

Since our outer world reflects our inner world, I reflected on the correlation. What message to our inner-selves does this place offer?

When we look at ourselves as an eco-system — mind, body and spirit — and reexamine old ways of doing things (habits, patterns of thought, things that once worked but no longer do), get rid of introduced pests that upset the balance (negative self-talk, unhealthy food, toxins…), and give space for our natural, pure self to flourish through self-acceptance that who we already are is more than enough and trust our heart and inner voice (akin to Mother Nature), we restore balance, harmony, and flow.

It takes a decision for something new and better. It takes commitment to the bigger vision. But once started, the changes appear quickly. Covid19 showed us how fast nature can bounce back once humans get out of the way; the outer world reflecting what we can experience in our inner world.

AND once your inner world begins to change, it’s reflected in your outer world. Meaning, when you’re heartfully happy, you create a life you love. It’s the natural flow of things.
