This week I’m preparing for my biggest adventure yet. It will be the fulfillment of a dream 40 years in the making. (More on that next week.) This got me thinking about all the reasons we use to keep our dreams and desires at bay, sometimes for decades.

Reasons such as:

Fear

  • fear of stepping outside your comfort zone
  • fear of doing it alone
  • fear of the unknown

Money

  • not having enough in savings now
  • worry about retirement years

Commitments and responsibilities

  • putting others’ needs and desires before your own
  • thinking there’s no one who can fill your shoes

…and many more.

What are 3 reasons YOU use to hold off your deepest desires?

If your heart is calling you to try something new, begin a new chapter, or fulfill a desire that’s been waiting for a someday that doesn’t seem to be getting any closer, ask yourself these 3 questions:

  1. Will I regret it if I don’t do it?
Whenever you’re faced with a decision, choice or option, this is a great question to ask. If the answer is yes, why not start putting the wheels in motion? The smallest first step is all it takes in order to take the next step, and the next. Then, before you know it, you’re there. Would you rather get to the end of your life with a series of regrets or look back on your life with a whole-hearted smile? “Someday” may never arrive unless you take the necessary steps to create the reality you want.
    .
  2. How many more “good” years do I have left?
My mother, who had the best memory of anyone I have ever met, got Alzheimer’s in her early seventies. My dad, who was once a runner, scuba diver and enjoyed canoeing, gradually lost his mobility, and it started not many years after his retirement. We may be living longer than ever before, but we’re not guaranteed the quality of life we desire. Another question to ask is: If not now, when?
    .
  3. How would it feel to fulfill this desire?
Imagine for a moment that you’ve stepped into your desire. You’re already there and living it. Imagine that you’ve been living this way for some time now. How would you feel? While still in this potential future, what advice would you give your present-day self?

Happiness is living in alignment with your heart and soul.

Move out of your head where the voice of fear resides and into your heart. What is it you truly desire? Let your inner wisdom have a say. Let your heart lead the way.

It’s your time, and it’s your turn.
