One practice I do at the beginning of each new year is to find my word (or words). I select one to three words that will guide me throughout the year in both my life and business. Sometimes the words for my life are the same as for my business and sometimes they’re different.

I love sharing this exercise because when you do it, it sets the foundation for the choices you make all year long. And since you’re always evolving, making it an annual practice gives you a chance to re-evaluate what you want and refine your focus.

How it works:

The words you select set the intention for what you envision in the coming year. They represent the core desire of what you want more of. They’re the foundation from which you will create your personal experiences and build your business offerings.

Each word helps guide your decisions. They help you know what to say ‘yes’ and ‘no’ to.

Throughout the year, each little word gives you a quick reminder of what you’re striving for. Like a compass, they help you stay on course or realign you with your overall big vision.

What’s your word (or words) for 2022?

How to do it:

Below are a few questions to help you find your word(s). Before you begin, take a few long, slow, deep breaths. Close your eyes, clear your mind and tune into your heart — because it’s from your heart, not your head, that your words will emerge.

    • What do I want to have or experience more of in my life (or business) this year?
    • How or what do I want to feel going forward?
    • What kind of experiences do I want to have? What do I need to do more of to bring those about?

Feel into what you really want for this fresh new year.

What words come to you as you ponder your desires? Let your words simmer for a while, even a few days. Narrow them down to a maximum of three words. Fewer words help you get to the core of what you’re seeking. (If you have a business, feel free to select three words for your life and three for your business.)

Be aware of when you slip into your head and start trying to figure out how you’re going to make your desires happen. That doesn’t matter right now. And don’t let your ego’s voice tell you it isn’t possible. It is.

You’ll know you’ve landed on your word when it feels right.

Once you’ve found your words, keep them handy as a continual reminder of your 2022 intention. Write them on sticky notes and post them on your bathroom mirror and computer. Add them as daily reminders on your phone.

You CAN create a life you love. Setting the foundation now will help guide you on your way so that when you set your next goal or create your next strategy, are struggling with a decision or feel stuck, your words will give you have a crystal clear North Star to guide you on your way.
