Even though the benefits of a gratitude practice are well-known, it’s hard to feel grateful when there’s so much to worry about, so much to fear and so many “What if’s?”

What if I get COVID-19 or one of the variants?
What if I can’t pay my bills?
What if I never find the love of my life?
What if I never find my purpose?

When you’re stuck in a spiral of “what if’s” everything feels out of your control. Anxiety occurs because you’re focused on a future full of unknowns, imagining the worst that can happen.

When you’re focused on “what if” you’re not aware of “what is” — the truth in the present moment.

All you really have is right now: this present moment, and the next, and the next…

What is your chance of getting COVID-19 right now? What can you do to keep yourself and your loved ones safe?

What is the truth of your current financial situation? (It’s often not as bad as you fear.) What can you do to improve it?

What are the ways love is currently present in your life? List five things you love about yourself, your life right now, the place you live, your friends and family members, nature… The truth is, love is all around you if you choose to see it.

What is it that lights you up? The more you enjoy life, the more you’re aligned with your inner purpose, which is to be more of who you really are.

When you focus on “what is” you become aware of all you currently have.

You realize that, in this very moment, you’re okay. You have everything you need right now.

Shifting from worry into an awareness of how you’re already being supported moves you from your head to your heart. You naturally feel more grateful and are able to make clear-headed, heart-centred decisions.

Sit for awhile with appreciation and gratitude for “what is”, THEN have some FUN with “what if”.

From a place of curiosity and wonder, start imagining all the good that’s possible.

“What if my body was really healthy? What would that feel like? What could I do that would bring me joy?” Imagine yourself in this state doing things you enjoy.

“What if I knew I always had enough money? What would I love to do?” Feel the freedom of choice.

“What if I chose to love my life right now? What’s one thing I could do today that is loving to me?” Feel yourself as content and happy and let your heart give suggestions.

“What if I could do anything I wanted? What are some things I find exciting?” Don’t try to figure out how you’ll make them happen. Just let your imagination flow.

Your heart holds your desires. Come into the present moment, connect with your heart and be open to the infinite possibilities that are out there for you; possibilities that feel good and allow you to create a life you love.

What if you made focusing on “what is” a daily practice? How would you feel then?
