This morning, I was inspired to listen to a few recordings I made almost two years ago while traveling in Bhutan. One particular recording held a message I needed to hear again today. Perhaps there’s some wisdom in it for you, too.

Our group had stopped at a forest to experience forest bathing. Each of us wandered off to find our own place to sit quietly and be in nature.

I followed my intuition and found a place that felt inviting. I settled myself and focused on the sounds around me. The squawk of large birds and the continual buzz of crickets lent a rhythm to the proceedings. I watched the pine branches sway in the breeze, then closed my eyes to meditate, hoping to gain a deeper understanding of all I had learned so far in this peaceful Buddhist country. But I couldn’t fully relax. I was becoming more agitated than calm. A fly insisted on circling my head and kept landing on me, undeterred by my multiple attempts to shoo it away regardless of how wildly I waved my hands.

Frustrated, I asked The Soul Collective what I was meant to know from this and recorded the message I received:

“While there are crickets about and birds about, it is the fly that is bothering you. And why is that? You say it’s because the fly is touching you, yet the breeze is touching you and you enjoy that. So what is it about the fly that you don’t enjoy? It is your conception of the fly that it brings germs and disease. There is a sensation of tickling that you find disturbing as well. Yet, if the fly were a butterfly, you would welcome it to your skin. You would think it was funny and delightful and an honour to be with you. What the fly is reminding you of is the pieces of your thoughts that keep you in your ego-state of negative thoughts and negative connotations.

When you look at it from a higher perspective, you are in the fly’s space. It is trying to move you. It is trying to see what you are about. It is trying to see if you can feed it in some way. So, let the fly feed you. Let it feed you with the knowledge of being able to ignore the thoughts and the so-called bothersome challenges that you have that you feel you need to get past and get through in order to be enlightened. So sit still, be quiet, and think of each fly that lands on you as a thought to dispel. Just one more thought that’s tickling your consciousness, tickling your awareness, bringing you back into a present moment, out of your meditative state of openness to the oneness. See if you can remain open to the oneness while the fly is on you.

Compassion for all sentient beings means compassion for even those you feel are not desirable to be in your presence. Try to relax into the knowledge that all sentient beings are here. And just as the fly is a nuisance for you, you are the nuisance for the fly.”
~The Soul Collective

Is there a message in there for you today?

Compassion for all sentient beings is a central Buddhist teaching. Imagine if we all adopted more of that these days. Start with compassion for yourself. Negative thoughts and old stories are just that. Swish them away while remaining open to the perfection you are — that we all are. The oneness.
