Here’s an interesting practice to try…
Begin to notice how many of your daily decisions are “should” decisions vs “could” decisions.
For instance, you get up in the morning and make your favourite beverage. Is your choice of cuppa based on what you feel you should have or what you could have?
What’s next on your to-do list?
Do you have a job or an event you need to get to?
If so, what route will you take?
What’s your first task when you arrive?
How is your day arranged?
A should mindset limits your awareness of choice. You do it because you feel obligated to do something for any number of reasons. You do it because you think you have to, not because you want to.
Shoulds make it easy to get stuck in routines and feel trapped by obligations.
When you live a should-led life, you give your power over to the situation. It’s in control, not you.
A could mindset opens you to possibilities you might not have considered before.
Is there a different route you could take to your destination? It may take a bit longer, but perhaps it’s more scenic with less traffic. How would that affect your mood and sense of well-being?
How you could arrange your day (versus how you think you should) helps you realize you have more control than you might have thought. There may be more flexibility in your schedule than you realized. There may be an opportunity to work in time for more joy, like meeting a friend for tea, or more time for yourself, like taking a walk, reading a book, exercising, or creating a delicious, healthy meal.
A could-led life helps you regain your power over your choices.
You realize there’s not one way and only one way, but an infinite number of choices — and they’re yours to make.
Selecting from a list of “could” possibilities allows you to fill your day with more of what you want to do.
Give it a try today.
Ask yourself, am I doing this because I feel I should, or because I could? Because I have to, or because I want to?
You’re greater than you think you are.
It’s your time. And it’s your turn.
