At some point in each of our lives, we begin to wonder what our purpose is.
You may have asked yourself, “Why am I here? What am I supposed to do with the time I have?”
Covid-19 may have had you asking those questions more than ever before.
For most people when they start to seek their purpose, they try to figure out what they can do that will make them feel more whole.
They begin to consider their interests and passions, wondering if they can turn them into a career (and perhaps they can). Sound familiar?
However, regardless of what you DO, you won’t likely feel on purpose for very long. Your dream job will become a chore and obligation just like everything else unless you connect it with your inner purpose — what I call your heart purpose.
How do you find your heart purpose?
You connect with who you already are at heart.
Let me explain…
I believe each of us is a soul with a body (rather than a body with a soul). Our humanness and life experiences cause us to stop trusting our soul. We learn to trust our brain much more than our inner wisdom, especially in Western cultures. When faced with a change in life, we try to use our brain to figure it all out. In doing so, we lose connection with our inner compass and we spend our lives searching for ways to reconnect with our purpose—something that feels good in our soul.
Life goes on and more and more we get used to living in separation from our soul. In fact most of us live in separation from our heart too. Our identities become tied to our roles. Then the role disappears and it feels like you disappear too.
Living your purpose isn’t something you DO; it’s who you ARE.
If you show up to a job knowing and owning the gifts you alone bring to each and every role, you’ll enjoy your job more regardless of what you do.
Jobs and roles will come and go but who you are at your core never changes.
The more you align with who you are at heart, the happier you’ll be no matter what you do.
Your heart is the doorway to your soul, therefore when you find your heart purpose, you connect with your soul purpose.
Finding your heart purpose allows you to see yourself from an inner perspective. You discover an identity which is a reflection of your soul, mirrored by your heart.
Then when change happens (and it will), your true identity stays with you allowing you to confidently forge ahead knowing that your roles don’t define who you are. You take all of you into your next endeavour.
When you’re shaping your next chapter, by all means look for things that interest you. Anytime you’re aligned with joy and love, you’re aligned with your heart and soul. But know that these are your passions not your purpose.
Passions, too, come and go. Finding your heart purpose allows you to bring the best of who you are to everything you do.
Finding your heart purpose is key to being heartfully happy in business and life.
